How do I get rid of Sperrmüll (bulky waste) in Vienna?

The City of Vienna names three routes for Sperrmüll (bulky waste): take it to a Mistplatz (recycling centre) yourself (free in household quantities), MA 48's paid Sperrmüll collection, or a paid skip.

The routes in detail

Take it yourself: Mistplatz
free in household quantities

  • Sperrmüll is waste that does not fit in the usual bins because of its size and nature, such as furniture, carpets, mattresses, windows and doors.
  • According to the acceptance rules, Vienna's Mistplätze are open to people registered as residents in Vienna and to businesses based in Vienna.
  • As a rule, one Mistplatz visit per day with up to 1 cubic metre per delivery is allowed. Partial unloading is not permitted.
  • Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum permitted weight are allowed, as are hire vehicles regardless of their number plate.

Have it collected: MA 48 clearance service and Sperrmüll collection
for a fee

  • MA 48 collects Sperrmüll directly from your flat, cellar or attic.
  • The service is charged. Current prices and booking only on the official page (in German).

Fill it yourself: MA 48 skip service
for a fee

  • MA 48 provides a skip for you to fill yourself.
  • Suitable for Sperrmüll in household quantities, not for complete flat clearances.

Larger quantities, such as flat clearances: the Rinter site
for a fee

  • Larger quantities of non-hazardous waste, for example from flat clearances, can be delivered to the Rinter site for a fee.

Intact items: the 48er-Tandler box
for further use

  • Working, clean and complete used goods in household quantities can be handed in at the 48er-Tandler box (MA 48's second-hand shop) at every Mistplatz.

Addresses and opening hours are quoted in German as published.

Please don't

  • According to the City of Vienna, rubble, mirrors and flat glass, wood, electrical appliances, Problemstoffe and recyclables are not Sperrmüll; each has its own collection at the Mistplatz.
  • The Mistplätze no longer accept plasterboard.

Steps to take with you

  1. Sort it out: keep intact items for the 48er-Tandler box and keep wood, electrical appliances and recyclables separate.
  2. Estimate the quantity: up to about 1 cubic metre per trip to the Mistplatz, otherwise collection, a skip or the Rinter site.
  3. Pick the nearest Mistplatz for your district from the table on this page.
  4. Shortly before you go, check the opening hours of the chosen Mistplatz on its official page, especially before public holidays.
