Method and data sources

Apartment Meister packages open administrative data so that you get a traceable page for a concrete question. This page explains where the facts come from, how they are processed and where the limit lies. We checked the licence of every dataset in the data.gv.at catalogue.

Our principles
  • We do not invent locations, opening hours, distances or prices.
  • Every content block names the source, a licence notice and a retrieval date.
  • The mapping from an item to a drop-off route sits in a fixed rules table, not in a spontaneous wording at runtime.
  • There is no legal advice and no tax advice.
  • For Problemstoffe (hazardous household waste) only the pointer to the official information appears, in Vienna to MA 48 (the City of Vienna's waste management department).

Required attribution according to the terms of use: Datenquelle: Stadt Wien – data.wien.gv.at (official German wording, which means “Data source: City of Vienna”). Licence: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). We harmonised the data (addresses, districts, opening hours, links) and calculated distances.

How the data are processed

  1. 1

    Read in

The Vienna layers enter processing through the City of Vienna WFS (GetFeature). The stops also come from a City of Vienna dataset; we do not use timetable data such as GTFS.

  2. 2

    Harmonise

Recurring fields such as address, district, opening hours, weblink and acceptance are placed in a shared schema. Missing fields stay empty. They are not filled in from other texts.

  3. 3

    Generate pages

Fixed pages are generated from the harmonised data, one per item for all of Vienna with a table for all 23 districts, in German and English. Every page carries a retrieval date, source name, licence notice and the link to the official information.

  4. 4

    Keep current

A weekly update reads the datasets again, checks the licences and proposes changes for review; nothing is published without human approval. If a retrieval fails, the last valid version stays. Where rule changes or public-holiday deviations are visible, a human check is needed before any wording is rewritten.

“Catalogue changed” is the date the catalogue metadata on data.gv.at were changed, not necessarily the date of the content. Most datasets publish no content date of their own; in that case we only state the retrieval date.

Which routes we name for each item is set in a fixed rules table. Every rule refers to one of these pages (all in German). If a page changes, the weekly check flags it for manual review; the rules table is never rewritten automatically.

The 48er-Tandler is an official service of the City of Vienna (MA 48's second-hand shop), not an OGD dataset. We link to it when the rules table provides for reuse; the notes on the official page apply: 48er-Tandler: handing in intact used goods.

All distances are straight lines (great-circle distance using the haversine formula) between two coordinates. They are not walking, cycling or driving routes. For the district tables we use one reference point per district: the centre of all public Altstoff (recyclables) collection points that the dataset lists for the district. These collection points are where people live. The geometric centre of the district area would lie in the Prater for 1020 and in the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) for 1140, for example. “Nearest” always means from the reference point, not from your address.

  • The City of Vienna provides Open Government Data without warranty. These pages also do not replace an official individual answer.
  • Opening hours, acceptance and access can change, especially on public holidays or when operations change.
  • An empty field means: nothing stands in the loaded data, not: the site does not exist.
  • Distances are straight lines from geodata, not a binding set of directions.
  • Kindergarten entries are location notes. They do not mean a free place.
  • There is no rating of stays, no price comparison and no legal review of a rental or accommodation contract.
  • Outside Vienna there are no waste pages in this release.

You can send notes on incorrect displays to the address given in the Impressum (legal notice). Corrections to the raw data sit with the publishing body.
