Where to take an old sofa in Vienna?

According to the City of Vienna, a sofa is Sperrmüll (bulky waste). You can drop it off free of charge in household quantities at a Mistplatz (recycling centre) or have MA 48 collect it for a fee. If it is still in good condition, the 48er-Tandler box for intact used goods is an option.

The routes in detail

Still in good condition? The 48er-Tandler box at the Mistplatz
for further use

  • Working used goods such as furniture can be handed in for reuse at the 48er-Tandler box (MA 48's second-hand shop) at every Mistplatz.
  • Items must be hygienically clean and complete. Only household quantities are accepted.
  • The City of Vienna lists large items and dismantled furniture as unsuitable for the box. Whether your sofa is accepted is decided by the staff on site.

Please don't

  • Sperrmüll does not belong in Restmüll (residual waste), because it strains the bins and the compactor in the collection lorry.
  • Waste may only be handed to authorised collectors. According to the City of Vienna, giving it to so-called Kleinmaschinenbrigaden (unauthorised door-to-door scrap collectors) is illegal.

Steps to take with you

  1. Check the condition: clean, complete and working points to the 48er-Tandler box.
  2. Sort out transport: vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, hire vehicles are allowed.
  3. Pick the nearest Mistplatz for your district from the table on this page.
  4. Shortly before you go, check the opening hours of the chosen Mistplatz on its official page, especially before public holidays.
  5. Alternatively, book the paid MA 48 collection on the official page.
